“You will never believe who I just ran into?”

“Jesus?”

“Haha, very funny.”

“I thought it was.”

Manny huffed. “Whatever. I just ran into Jocasta.”

“Who?”

Jocasta.”

“Oedipus’ mother? I really don’t approve of you hanging out with someone who sexes up her son.”

Manny groaned. The benefit of living at home through college was free room, board, and food. The downside was dealing with his crazy mother. “You really don’t remember Jocasta?”

Eve looked over her shoulder and gave him a look that he should know that she didn’t.

“My junior year prom date ring any bells for you?”

She stopped her dinner prep and turned around. She eyed her son carefully. “That can’t be right.”

“And why not?”

“Junior year is when you went through your gay period. You went to prom with a guy.”

Manny had to stop himself from beating himself over the head with a cutting board. “You are insane! I’ve never had a gay period. I went to junior prom with Jo.”

This time Eve huffed, though it was hardly serious. “Are you telling me, after all this time, Jo was a girl.”

“Of course it was. Why do you think I bought her a corsage?”

“I just thought you were the ‘man’ in the relationship; I was extremely proud, by the way, always nice to know your son isn’t getting pounded by some dude that you never introduced me to.

“Oh.”

“That’s right young man, ‘oh,’” she laughed. “You were saying you ran into her?”

Eve went back to the counter where she was battering fish in panko. Manny grabbed a chair and sat down. “She’s fine. Got married to Jacob, the guy she ended up going to senior prom with; they have a kid now.”

“You sure the kid wasn’t a result of senior prom?”

Manny snorted. He watched as his mother danced around the stove top, frying fish, checking on other pots, and cleaning dishes. Eve was a strange woman, though still very pretty in her mid-forties. She had never bothered to remarry after her husband had died many years back. Manny could hardly remember him anymore.

“Mom?”

“Yes?”

“Did you really think I went through a gay period?”

“No.”

Eve pulled the last of the fish out of oil and turned off the stove. She turned around and faced him. She cocked her head to the left as she observed him. “I never really thought it was just a period, to be honest.”

Manny couldn’t help himself, he began to chuckle. It blossomed into a full out laugh. He stood up and walked over to his mom. He was only slightly taller, but he easily enveloped her in a hug. “You are crazy.”

“Always and forever,” she sung, hugging him back with all her strength.

“Mom,” he began. “Did you really say that ‘Jocasta sexes up Oedipus?’”

“Yes, I did,” she responded as she pushed him towards the fridge to grab drinks for dinner.

“You are so wrong for that.”

“Sweetheart, haven’t you learned by now, I’m wrong for a lot of things.”

“Always and forever,” he joked back.

It was Eve’s turn to laugh.
